Preparing for Self-Employment

Thinking about going out on your own can be exhilarating and exciting.  You fantasize about no more rules or micromanagers to deal with.  Your schedule will be up to you and finally you can take time off whenever you want to.   Your focus is only on the positive aspects of self-employment.  Unfortunately, there are many mistakes to make.  I hope I can help you avoid them.

As a Personal and Business Coach, I help people transition from employee to self-employed or take their business to the next level.   In my own life, I’ve made the transition three times.  My depth of knowledge is extensive and I find it very fulfilling to help people build their own business.

Preparing for anything starts with asking… Why?  Why do you want to do this?  Why right now?  Other questions include… How do you know if you have what it takes?  What sacrifices will you need to make? How well do you handle emotional challenges or hang in there when the going gets rough?  Who can you rely on to give you good “business” advice?

Remember these: Do’s and Don’ts

#1  Don’t start your business if you don’t have enough money.

Do have at least six months of living expenses in reserve.

#2  Don’t make a reactive or emotionally based decision.

Do realize you can make your work life better without going out on your own.

#3  Don’t go out on your own because you can’t find a job.

Do include self-employment (full or part time) as one of your options.

#4  Don’t take the leap before you have some business in place.

Do start your business before you leave your job.

#5   Don’t depend on your business to grow without dips.

Do find the support you need for when you feel discouraged.

#6  Don’t neglect your network.

Do stay in touch with your current and potential clients and connectors.

#7   Don’t expect your business model to stay the same.

Do evaluate what’s working and what’s not working on a regular basis.

If you are considering self-employment, I’d be happy to help you figure out if it is the best option for you!  Call me anytime!
