The Best Way to Ask for (and Get) What You Want

In Business and Personal Relationships if you don’t ask for what you want, you probably won’t get it. That sounds sad and why would you settle for or give up on what will make you happier.  There are many reasons why.  That’s not what this blog is about.  Instead I want to share a success strategy that should help you get more of what you want.  Sound good?!

How you ask is extremely important for getting the best result.  Rather than making your request from a place of wanting focus on expressing What You Need.  I remember saying to my husband that I wanted him to be more affectionate with me.  I started with You are Never affectionate and I really don’t like that about you.  Do you think I got what I wanted?  Absolutely not!

How could I have delivered my request differently?

I could have…

  1. Been nicer by starting from a loving place
  2. Thought about why I needed more affection.
  3. Written down the reasons ahead of time.
  4. Paid attention to how he feels and how he might react
  5. Asked for something specific like a morning hug
  6. Acknowledged our love languages were different
  7. Made sure I was showing him love in the way that mattered most to him

Even if you don’t get what you hoped for right away you’ll feel better knowing you had the courage to ask.  It’s very important to keep in mind that “Success is about Making Progress!”

We all have wants and unmet needs.  Asking for what you need, in the right way, will expand your self esteem, enrich your relationships and encourage others you love to follow suit!

What do you think?  Please give it a try and let me know how it goes 🙂
