Navigating A Fork In The Road

It’s so easy to stress out when you approach a fork in the road.  You want to know what the right choice is.  You don’t want to worry that you made the wrong decision.   I believe most decisions are right “enough!” You make it work and you continue to learn about your decision making style so you can become an even better decision maker.

How do you decide which fork to take?  Do you make a list of pros and cons?  Do you follow your gut?  Do you meditate and try to visualize each option?  Do you consult with friends, family and/or a professional counselor or coach?  Do you wait till the decision is made for you?

There is no wrong answer.  I used to hate hearing that response.  Why do we work so hard to get the right answer if there is no wrong answer? The truth is that all decisions are temporary and you can always make another one.  As your life and current circumstances change there will continually be new forks requiring new decisions.

How do you improve your decision making style?

  1. Know what it is and accept it without judgement
  2. Work towards the middle.  If you tend to be too quick or too analytical, then slow down or focus on fewer details.
  3. Take “baby steps”  Sustainable change requires going slowly.
  4. Acknowledge the positive results however small they are
  5. Make a final decision and commit to it… For now!

A fork in the road offers an opportunity for reflecting on what is most important to you.   Focus on your highest priorities so you can make a better decision.  If you find yourself tensing up take a few slow deep breaths.  Commit to being calm, centered and confident.  A great combo for creating more success and happiness!
