Making a Retirement U-Turn

When you make a U-turn you probably aren’t happy about it.  How could you have made such a stupid mistake?  In a second something can change which forces a new decision or direction.  No matter how much you prepare, it is hard to know what something will be like till you get there.  One example is Retirement!

Very often retirees decide to go back to work.  Many do so for financial reasons.  Others are fine financially but miss the structure of a work setting, social interaction and the opportunity to make a difference. Going back to work doesn’t mean you made a mistake or that you are a failure in any way.  You want to recognize your resourcefulness and actually applaud yourself.

Learning how to adjust to inevitable change is critical for happiness and peace of mind.  Change is hard to manage.   It’s easy to lose your way, get discouraged and possibly even give up and just live with your unhappy life.  Life is too short!

Five Change Management Tips:

  1. Make room for your feelings: Acknowledge that you feel bad. Express your “bad” feelings in writing or out loud.
  2. Focus on finding opportunities. Create an Ideal Profile to help you stay focused on what you want.
  3. Develop a strategic “baby step” action plan. Reward yourself along the way.
  4. Determine who will be your primary support people. If you start feeling down or discouraged you may want to hire a professional counselor.
  5. Balance persistence with patience and be nice to yourself.

To maintain a life you love, you will need to change your course.  U-turns allow you to change direction and create a new vision.  Pay attention to how you feel, be open to making a needed change and celebrate choices!
