Getting Things Off Your Chest, Can Change Your Life!

Nothing haunts us like the things we don’t say, that we know are important to say in order to feel better.  Why do we keep things buried inside and fret for weeks, months or years before sharing them.  I can think of many reasons and I’m sure you can too!

Recently, I was meeting with a young woman, approaching 30 years old, and at her second session she reported feeling so much better.  She acknowledged that it was mostly due to finally sharing what she had been avoiding dealing with for many months.  The relief was huge and with it came renewed energy and a commitment to self care that she hadn’t had in years.

When something first starts to bother you, it’s natural to think it’s just a blip on the screen.  It will go away as fast as it came or soon enough that you don’t need to give it much attention.  Then it doesn’t go away and actually starts to bother you more and more.  Now you are forced to acknowledge the bad feelings, although you still don’t have to deal with them.  It’s your choice as to whether you avoid or face your feelings head on.  Most of us avoid for at least a little while.

Some suggestions for sharing stored up uncomfortable feelings and thoughts…

  1. Make a commitment to push yourself harder to do what you would normally avoid doing, even knowing it’s in your best interest.
  2. Get support!  Hire a professional or find a friend to go on this journey with you.
  3. Remember how much better you felt the last time you got something “off your chest!”
  4. Think about the consequences to yourself and your relationship if you don’t do it.
  5. Keep in mind you may not do it perfectly and that’s okay.  It’s a step in the right direction!

In your work and personal life you get scared to say what you believe will make you or another person feel bad. This behavior interferes in a significant way with your overall life satisfaction and success.  I know you don’t like when this happens so that’s why I wrote this post.  Let me know if it’s helpful.  Thank you in advance. 🙂

Cheers to Personal and Professional Growth!
