How to Become Better at Listening to Yourself

Listening to Yourself and Self Care

Listening to yourself is absolutely an art.  There is no fool proof formula that you can follow.  You and I know how important it is for creating a better life and yet we  either don’t do it or don’t do it very well.  How can you get better at listening to yourself? I’ve been working on this for years.  Here is what I’ve learned… so far!

1. Remember that listening to yourself is hard to do. 

It’s hard because we tend to focus on negative thoughts or self critical comments.  Why in the world would you want to get better at listening to yourself if you end up feeling worse.  

2.  You need a strong commitment to being more positive and a willingness to push past your negative commentary.

You want to listen to yourself with a loving spirit and immediately reorient when you become self critical or judgmental.  I tell myself “off limits” when I notice negative thoughts about myself running through my mind.  It’s up to me to stop or tame them.

3.  A regular routine or structure is very helpful. 

While alone be quiet for a few minutes every day.  Do it in the morning, evening or whenever it’s best for you. Notice your breathing and where in your body you feel tense.  Intentionally relax your muscles and mind.  Say something loving or kind to yourself and try to fully embrace it.  

4.  You have to hold yourself accountable and I suggest getting an accountability partner.  

It’s much easier to make a change when you engage another person in the process.  Let them know what you are trying to achieve and schedule regular times to check in.  

5.  Celebrate the positive changes that (I promise!) will happen as you start to listen (without judgement) to yourself and others too!    

Being judgmental starts with yourself.  Once you stop judging yourself you will be less likely to judge others.  Your relationships and life will be more fulfilling and fun!

     As you become a better and better listener to yourself and also others you will experience less stress, more confidence and much more contentment.  I’d say it’s worth a try!  Let me know how it goes for you.  Thanks!
