A Better Way To Accomplish A Goal

Setting a goal is easy compared to accomplishing it.  The cycle starts with making progress.  Then comes the setback.   You engage in negative self-talk (what’s wrong with me or I should have…) or you make excuses.  The goal isn’t accomplished.  You feel bad.

As a Coach I help people prepare, set and achieve goals.  As a Licensed Counselor I help my clients manage difficult emotions and listen to their inner wisdom.

A Better Way To Accomplish A Goal is to first focus on your pain.  You have tried and not succeeded.  Who wouldn’t feel bad.  Acknowledge your disappointment, frustration or anger.  Write in a journal or stomp your feet while taking a walk.  Cuss words are allowed!  Screaming in a safe place is another option.  It is my personal favorite 🙂

Make sure you have a strong Emotional Support System.  Allow your best friends and family to help you stay motivated and positive.  Accept acts of kindness and caring words.  They mean what they say.  Successful and happier people have many helpers.

Why set a goal?  To help you have something you want.  It allows you to measure your progress and celebrate small successes.  A “good” goal fits with your highest values and priorities.   It helps you stay motivated and committed to staying the course.

Goals are easy to set and hard to accomplish.  The reasons are logical and mostly emotional.  Be aware of your thoughts and feelings.  The negative and bad ones need the most attention.  Please don’t ignore them.  Try one of my suggestions for releasing difficult emotions.  Let me know how it goes.  Thanks!
