Including your life experiences, level of confidence and how you handle stress (stay calm or freak out), personality plays a large role in the decisions you make and the quality of your relationships. The Corona Virus pandemic and sheltering in place is stressful. It’s not bringing out the best in most people. You are probably exhibiting more of your negative personality traits. What can you do about it? Learn how to manage your personality more effectively. It can be done. I promise!
My Personality: As the oldest of three I am a caretaker and very responsible. I have confidence and self esteem which by the way took years to develop. I’m definitely not calm. When I can’t easily solve a problem (particularly something technical) I get agitated and angry.
Problem: Since sheltering in place I’m more stressed out which naturally brings out the worst parts of my personality. My significant other is negatively impacted and so am I.
Solution: I’m working hard to stop myself when I start to get frustrated or freak out. What’s helping is my determination, self compassion and pausing to take a couple of slow deep breaths. I’m also doing more yoga (online) and a short meditation every morning.
Result: We are experiencing less stress and having more fun! I’m slowly starting to believe I can become a calmer person. This is big!
Are you aware of how your personality impacts your life and relationships? What have you learned about yourself that you like and don’t like? Are you open to changing some of your ways? Ask those you are close to for some suggestions? Offer to do the same for them. With their permission provide feedback always starting with something positive!
Everyone has a unique personality. It is influenced by environment (especially childhood experiences) and genetics. Becoming a better manager of your personality will help you make better decisions and enjoy your life more.
