The Second Highest Reading Group and Self Esteem

In second grade I experienced something very upsetting… I didn’t get into the highest reading group.  Instead I was put into the second highest reading group.  I clearly remember it and that was close to sixty years ago.  Before that moment I felt smart and liked myself. After not at all.

My battle with low self esteem started when I was seven. It took years of psychotherapy and experiencing several successes to slowly rebuild it. Research reveals that Self Esteem is an essential ingredient for achieving true satisfaction and success! It’s worth taking seriously.

It’s harder to go through a transition if you don’t like yourself. Before transitioning from employee to self employed I got into therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy taught me to reframe my negative thoughts to fit with reality.  Previously I was a pro at making up negative stories that weren’t based on facts. They made me feel worse.

I bet you have a story like my reading group experience about losing confidence.  Think about the impact of your confidence (low or high) on the quality of your life and relationships.  What have you done to build and maintain your confidence?  My top tip: Keep doing it!

Besides therapy what also helped my self esteem recovery was building a successful catering business during my late 20’s and early 30’s.  I did something I had never done before.  I pushed past many obstacles. This  success story became a springboard for many more.

You will experience ups and downs in life.  Your self esteem and confidence are not stagnant.  They fluctuate based on changing circumstances.  Change is inevitable and provides the necessary challenges we need to keep growing and thriving.  Successfully navigating change increases confidence and self esteem.  I love it!

Cheers to Confidence!
