Are You at Your Wits End?

What do you do when what’s worked in the past is no longer working?  This happened to me recently.  I felt down and discouraged and couldn’t seem to shake it.  I tried all my usual stress and mood management techniques.  They weren’t working.  I was at my wits end!

For many years I’ve prided myself on how well I manage my ups and downs.  When I’m feeling really bad or really good I know not to make significant or important decisions. Almost every decision can wait a day or two or even more.   

Sometimes what has always worked doesn’t work.  You feel stopped In your tracks.  What’s going on?  Why aren’t your tried and true techniques working this time?  It’s hard to come up with an answer when you are frazzled.  What can you do to get yourself out of this horrible funk?

It’s time to Do Something Different or add an additional mood stabilizing or enhancement exercise.   Here is what I discovered and what was most helpful.

Exercise and calming activities like yoga and meditation are effective stress and anger management tools.   Talking a problem out with a trusted friend or colleague is also helpful.  Taking a walk and getting some fresh air makes you feel better along with writing in your Feelings Journal.  

What was missing? 

I wasn’t acknowledging or making room to feel my frustration and anger.  Yep, I had shoved my anger under the rug hoping it would go away on it’s own.  Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way.  In fact it ends up causing more bad feelings when you don’t deal with it or let it out.  

What happened that upset me?   Two clients rescheduled their appointments to the following week and a prospect decided to postpone his career coaching till a major project at work was completed.  I was disappointed.  I don’t like unexpected changes in my schedule.  

After recognizing I was angry, I used my signature anger releasing tool,  Scribble & Scream. This involves taking a crayon or two and vigorously scribbling till you run out of energy to continue.  Another anger releasing exercise is to punch a pillow and let out sound or a scream.  I felt much better after releasing pent up negative energy.

I’ve become passionate about the benefits of releasing negative energy or anger.  Combining sound with a physical exercise allows your brain and body to calm down.  Then you can make better decisions and build stronger relationships at work and in your personal life.
