Thinking About Transitioning From Employee to Self-Employed?

Are you thinking about Self-Employment or Starting Your Own Business?” It can be fun to think about and it’s a pleasurable distraction when you dislike your job or work life.  Problem is it’s not what it’s cracked up to be.  Succeeding in self-employment takes way more than passion, living your purpose or doing what you love!

Top media mavens deceive disheartened and dissatisfied employees with the promise that Passion Propels Profits or Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow.  My heart sinks with sadness knowing this is happening all over the place.  It’s just plain and simple… Not True.

You need WAY MORE than passion to launch a successful business.  First you have to figure out if the trade offs are worth it.  What are the trade offs or hidden costs? How can you “smartly” prepare for them?

“Some of” The Trade Offs or Hidden Costs:

  1. You almost always make less money your first year
  2. You have fewer people to interact with, as you are “On Your Own!”
  3. Your lifestyle is less routine.  No more “regular” working hours.
  4. Managing money is different without a “steady” paycheck.
  5. Your success depends on staying positive during difficult times.

How to Smartly Prepare for SUCCESS!

  1. Talk to successful business owners particularly in your line of business.
  2. Have plenty of savings (6 months minimum) to cover living expenses.
  3. Discuss your transition and get support from your closest family and friends
  4. Be prepared to take some activities off your plate.  A new business is like a new baby!
  5. Meet with someone like me who will help you stay positive, motivated and committed.

New business owners will fluctuate between excitement and fear.  Emotions Management needs to be a top priority.  You want to make important decisions when you are feeling calmly confident.   Take care of yourself and your business by taking time each day to regroup and reflect.  It will make all the difference.  It did for me :-).

Cheers to professional and personal growth!
