The Truth About Retirement

Do you ever worry or wonder what your retirement will be like?  The truth is there is no way of knowing what your retirement will be like till you get there.  It is kind of like having your first child.  Both are transitions you look forward to for many months and even years.  When it happens you are initially inthralled and then reality sets in.

Transitions are hard no matter how you slice them.  Retirement happens to be one of the hardest of all.  The biggest issue and question is “Now What?” or “What Will I Do?”  The truth is you now have hours and hours of free time that you didn’t have before you retired.  What’s a person to do!

My next question is “What do you Want To Do and Why?  The why refers to your values.  Creating a remarkable retirement requires you to re-evaluate your values.  Examples of values are health and fitness, creativity, intellectual stimulation, time with friends… Make choices based on your highest values and priorities.

With values and priorities you are diving into deeper waters.  The answers require personal reflection and listening to your inner wisdom.   This needs to be a process.   Take breaks to allow time for digesting your reflections.  Be committed to making choices that are good “for now”.  Change is continual.  Always pay attention to how you feel and make adjustments as needed.

For Successful Professionals and Business Owners retirement can be surprisingly unsettling.  It is a myth that once you get rid of your work worries you will be more relaxed.  It’s also a myth that having enough money ensures an enjoyable retirement.  Once you find new friends and figure out activities that are fulfilling and fun then you are ready to be a happy and relaxed retiree!

Everyone needs extra support to get through a tough transition.  This support can come from friends or professionals or both.  Join my Retirement Connections* group to learn more about how to make your retirement remarkable and also meet others in a similar situation.
