Likability in Business and Life

Being likable is about as good as it gets. It enhances every relationship and makes life more enjoyable and fun! Likability is measured on a continuum.  There are few at the far ends and most are somewhere in the middle.  The good news is you can raise your likability if you want to.

Being likable gives you power and a greater ability to achieve your goals.  If someone likes you it means they like the way you make them feel.  They feel the love!  I’m using love a little loosely and a better word would be Caring.  Love or Caring is the glue that holds a business and relationships together.

As a Licensed Counselor, Business and Life Coach I help successful professionals and business owners have more of what they want.   Most of them are very likable.   From my perspective likability is a requirement for success!  My job is to help them maintain and maximize their likability at work and home too!

Seven Suggestions for Becoming More Likable

  • Say “Hi” with a smile, first impressions are extremely important
  • Be positive and proactively reach out and help out
  • Empathize by saying “that sounds hard”
  • Be understanding, sincere, friendly, considerate and appreciative
  • Pay attention and focus on the other person (eliminate distractions)
  • Don’t pass judgment or criticize
  • During conversation make the other person feel liked and respected.

Be aware of your actions and behaviors.  At work, make every effort to be caring and kind even when you don’t feel like it.  The benefits of being likable are endless.   It’s worth the time and effort to intentionally do something to be more likable.

We all have room for improvement!  Some of my suggestions aren’t easy so be patient with yourself.  Remember that regression is part of progress!  At times you just won’t feel like smiling and you won’t!
