My Career Story: The Queen of Re-Invention and Determination!

Where do I begin?  Such a common statement and now I get it.  Did my career start with having a lemonade stand, selling girl scout cookies, teaching tennis lessons or did it start with my first “real” job?  I believe my childhood interests and successes played a big part in creating a satisfying career.

In sixth grade I wanted to be the first woman and Jewish president of the United States.  This was the platform I ran on to become the president of my elementary school.  I was driven to make a difference and make people happy!  I was born to be a leader and energizer!

Throughout my childhood I thought about being a counselor.  If a friend got discouraged or down I did my best to help them feel better.  Personally I struggled with perfectionism, anxiety and depression.  I saw a therapist during my teen years.  It was a positive experience.

People say “I’m the queen of re-inventing myself.”  I’d call it being very motivated to enjoy my work life and not okay with following in my father’s footsteps.  He built a successful business but didn’t enjoy his work life.  Luckily he sold it in his early 50’s and was able to reinvent himself and do something he enjoyed.

I’ve also given myself the freedom to leave a job (without another job) because I  always had at least six months of living expenses in a separate “untouchable” account.   This allowed me to make a change (which is hard) with less stress.  There is nothing better than financial peace of mind 🙂

I’ve always been a bit different.  When I was captain of a sports team I’d pick the least talented players.  I loved a challenge and was a natural at coaching and bringing out the best in others.  I was attracted to the paths that were not well worn.  If someone said I couldn’t do something then that became the fuel for my determination to show them I could.

I had a catering business in high school (1972-1973).  Not a real business since my parents paid for the ingredients, but still a confidence builder.  In 1984 I started a “real” business  “Margo’s Feast A La Cart” with “gourmet meals delivered to your door” as the tagline.  At the time I was a trailblazer or an entrepreneur!   I had excellent mentors.  I took their suggestions seriously.  It led to my success!

I was fortunate to sell my catering business (1988) and went back to being a counselor.  I was drawn to doing something more meaningful.  For a few years I worked in an agency setting and then started a private practice specializing in older adults.  You have to have a niche to succeed.  I put together an interactive workshop “Growing Wiser” and presented at senior living communities.  It paved the path for many referrals and new clients.

In 2000 I was ready for another change.  I had an opportunity to bring my psychology skills into the business world.   I worked with clients and staff at a financial planning firm.  After two years I went out on my own (again!) and started a Personal and Business Coaching business.  I work at the intersection of psychology and business.  It’s a perfect fit for me.

My success comes from having stellar people in my life.  I have a knack for attracting smart, kind and caring people who love helping.  Collaborative and creative problem solving makes me happy.  I’m  open to suggestions and make adjustments when needed.  I stop myself from blaming or complaining.  Instead I say “What Can I Do Differently to Make Things Better?  I’m driven to be the best I can be.

I’ve been writing blogs as a Professional Counselor and Business, Career and Life Coach for many years.  I never considered sharing my personal career story until now!  I hope it is helpful and interesting!

Spring is here and Atlanta is the place to be 🙂
