Constructive Feedback: How to be really good at it!

I’m into feedback!  How about you?  For me, when I’m engaged in a two-way feedback process I get excited.  I’m ready to learn and grow!  What can I do to be a better coach, counselor, colleague, client or close friend? I crave constructive feedback, starting with something positive!

Constructive feedback combines things that are working well and not working well.  It provides an opportunity to improve a relationship and have a better life!  What can each person do differently to make “our” relationship work better?  From my perspective there is no end to professional and personal growth!  There is always room for improvement.

Five Ways to Get Better at GIVING Feedback…

  1. Do it regularly.  Incorporate a Feedback Process as part of relationship maintenance
  2. Set a time in advance rather than doing it impromptu
  3. Feedback is a private affair.  Don’t give personal feedback in front of other people
  4. ALWAYS start with something positive
  5. Prepare in advance for what’s working well and what’s not (factual with an example)

Five Ways to Get Better at RECEIVING Feedback…

  1. Pay attention to any nervous feelings you might have. Take a couple of calming breaths.
  2. Be open to learning.  Remember that feedback done well can be a life changer!
  3. Don’t be defensive.  If something they say upsets you… reflect before responding.  Utilize The Power of The Pause!  Take more calming breaths.
  4. Ask clarifying questions when you are confused or don’t fully understand. Keep asking till you are fully clear.  Focus on facts and ask for another example.
  5. Show appreciation and thank them.  Constructive Feedback is a gift!

As a Business, Career and Life Coach I ask for feedback frequently.  I want to know what was helpful and what wasn’t.  What suggestions do we have for each other to make our coaching or mentor-mentee relationship work even better? It takes telling the truth with kindness and making sure to start and end on a positive note.  Make suggestions simple and short!

Cheers to Better and Better!
