Are You Ready?

How do you know if you are ready to make a change?  From my professional and personal experience, I know that making a change is something you don’t do the first, second or even third time you think about it.  It usually takes months of thinking and feeling frustrated before you are ready to take action!

As a Licensed Counselor, Business and Career Coach, I help my client’s transition into a new job, self-employment, semi-retirement or full retirement.  These are big changes that most people resist making until they are ready!  How do know when you are finally ready to make this important transition?

Pre-Transition Requirements to set you up for Success!

  1. Being very tired of thinking about what you want to do and not doing it.
  2. Creating a positive picture of your life after the transition.
  3. Having a strong support system including health, relationships and resources.
  4. Understanding how you will manage inevitable obstacles and challenges.
  5. Having a basic “baby steps” transition plan in place.
  6. Hiring a professional transition coach and counselor to give you “experience based” guidance, as well as help you maintain your motivation and confidence. (This is a suggestion, not a requirement)

Not being ready is not a bad thing and it may even be a good thing.  Maybe you aren’t meant to be a business owner or even though you have enough money, the time to retire is not right now.  The reasons can range from family roles and responsibilities to still enjoying your work.

Knowing the requirements for a successful transition will make the decision making and implementation process easier.  Expect to be excited and scared even if you are ready.  When the going gets tough, remember that you really were ready before you took the leap.  The road will be rocky at times, but you have what it takes to experience your vision.
