Our parents talk to us. They share positive and negative messages. The negative messages interfere with our innate knowing about what is best for us. A negative message goes something like… You can’t do that because you are too ___ or you can only do ___ because you are ___. Parents think they know best. But they don’t!
One that stands out for me is about sitting still. The message was I could never be a therapist or counselor because I can’t sit still. I was only suited for a career where I would be active. Luckily my passion pushed me to pursue a counseling career. Yes, Passion is Powerful!
Past negative messages limit potential, possibilities and pleasure. You get stuck in I could never ___ because I already know that I’m not ____ enough. It takes effort and time to undo negative messages, insert the truth and live the truth!
So how do you do it? Here is an Example…
I have to be strong (show no fear) no matter what. If I’m not strong no one will respect me. I can’t be an effective leader, parent or professional.
- Acknowledge the negative message
- Accept that it isn’t true
- Understand where it came from (probably a parent)
- Flush out the truth by focusing on the reasons why you can’t do or have something.
- Challenge each reason till you feel comfortable with the truth
It’s easy to get caught up in negative or self-limiting beliefs. Once you realize your belief is false then you can let it go. This allows your true self to emerge and expand. It’s exhilarating!
As a Licensed Counselor, Career and Life Coach, I help clients manage their negative emotions and limiting messages from childhood. We quickly move past “I’ll never be able to… or I can’t…” by inserting the truth and reinforcing it through talking and writing.
Shed what’s not true and soar with the truth. Give yourself the gift of getting “good” guidance. I promise the benefits will outweigh the costs. Enjoy a more fulfilling, happier and successful life!
