As a business development consultant and coach I know “the riches are in the niches”. Your niche is where your experience, expertise and reputation come together, and it is a great way to leverage your business and increase your income.
It is a common misconception to believe that you will get more business by casting a wide net. Some believe you should work with anyone who will pay you, since you never know when another opportunity will come along. You need to operate from an abundance mentality to be a master networker.
You may be afraid that if your narrow your target market you will lose potential clients and income. This fear is common among newly self-employed professionals or those who are anxious about money. In actuality, when you focus on your niche market it makes it easier for others to refer business to you. You will be more successful by developing a speciality and becoming so well known in that niche that you will be sought out for your expertise.
How do you find a niche? Here are some questions to help you get started.
1. What profession, business or industry do you know inside and out?
2. What type of clients do you most enjoy working with?
3. What are you known for? What do people talk about when they talk about you?
Taking some time to answer these questions will start you on the road to finding your niche and taking your business to the next level.
Creating a niche is a process. An experienced business development coach will help you stay disciplined, positive and motivated as you define, develop and market your niche.
