I am a licensed counselor and business coach. I work at the intersection of Psychology and Business. I also work at the intersection of Counseling and Coaching. What Intersection Are You At? This is an important question to ask yourself. Why?
When you want to attract someone from a sea of prospects it is best to stand out. This could be an employer, client or business partner. For me, by communicating my intersections (and added value) I’ve increased referrals and internet inquiries incredibly.
How do you choose an intersection? I searched my bookshelves and realized half my non-fiction books related to psychology and personal growth and the other half were about business and entrepreneurship. What do you read for professional and personal growth?
If you have two professional degrees or interests this is a good place to start. As a business attorney or tax accountant you work at the intersection of law or accounting and business. An MBA is helpful, as is a business niche, such as healthcare or hospitality.
A tangential expertise can help you define your intersection. An example is a massage therapist who also does nutrition counseling or mindfulness meditation training. Prospective clients easily get what sets you apart and makes you more valuable.
For seasoned professionals finding your intersection(s) will help you stay stimulated and excited about your work. As you mature in your career you need something new to learn and teach. Being able to charge more is the cherry on top!
Sometimes something so simple can make a huge difference. This is one of those times. So go ahead and start working on what your intersection is or what you want it to be. It was a fun exercise for me and I think you will agree 🙂
