Emotional intelligence (EQ) is more than just a buzzword—-it’s a set of essential skills that can transform how we understand ourselves and others. It will help you have more satisfying and successful personal and professional relationships. As a counselor and life coach I help my clients understand the importance of “Focusing on Feelings First, Solving Second and Third Taking Action.” Emotions Management is my specialty!
The Four Key Skills
- Self Awareness
- Self Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Management
1. Recognizing and understanding your own emotions. How do you know how you’re feeling? Sounds like an easy question but for many it’s not. I recommend paying attention to your body and where you typically feel tension. If that part of your body starts speaking you are feeling! Chose a “bad” feeling word when this happens. These include frustration, irritation, anxiety, fear, guilt, disappointment, overwhelm…
2. Figuring out how to stay calm and control your impulses. You’re at risk for saying or doing something that will make you feel worse. I suggest breathing! Taking three slow inhales and exhales can do wonders for calming you down. Calm your mind and nervous system with yoga, meditation, tai chi,… or engage in a favorite cardio activity or hobby.
3. Picking up on emotional cues and social interactions. Pay attention to facial expressions, eye contact, body positioning and tone and volume of someone’s voice. Are they withdrawing or not participating? If something has changed then something is going on. This can go both ways… feeling bad or good.
4. Communicating clearly and managing conflicts well are key. It’s important to set a boundary, say no or that doesn’t work for me when necessary. When you need help or support ask for it and be willing to give it to someone else.
Making emotional intelligence a priority will enhance your relationships and life! It’s my passion to help people become better managers of their emotions. My initial consultation is complimentary!
Happy Autumn!
