I often hear “I don’t know what to do. I feel stuck.” There is a sense of exasperation and fear. Big decisions are difficult, distracting and stressful. It is hard to stay calm and confident. As a Professional Counselor and Coach I help people feel calmer and more confident. Putting things in perspective helps as well as engaging in stress reducing activities.
Difficult decisions my clients deal with…
- Should I leave my Job or Relationship or try to make it better?
- Should I Change Careers, Change Companies or Consider A New Role?
- Should I Accept Less Compensation (how much?) for More Enjoyment and Fulfillment?
- Should I go out on my own or Start My Own Business?
- Should I start or continue On-Line Dating? What do I need to do to get better results?
My advice on How To Make A Better “Big” Decision…
- Identify why the decision is hard for you to make (money is tight, fear of failure or rejection)
- Acknowledge the impact of past experiences. Clear out negative thoughts and feelings.
- Remember there are always more options and opportunities.
- Weigh advantages and disadvantages (pros and cons). Every decision comes with trade offs!
- Seek advice from good friends, family and maybe a professional.
- Trust your instincts and listen to your gut feeling.
- Plan for contingencies and consequences. You can always make another decision!
Sometimes we make decisions that work out well. Other times we wish we had made a different decision. It’s important to not get too attached to the outcome. You make the best decision you can at any given time. Your level of stress has a huge influence. Things are always changing so it’s impossible to account for what may happen after you make a decision. A big decision requires respect. Please don’t make it hastily. I promise you will make better decisions if you follow my advice.
Have a good November!
