I Used To Feel All Alone Until…

When you’re really down or discouraged it’s tempting to feel sorry for yourself.  You believe that nobody can fully understand what you are going through.   If you shut down in self pity I can tell you first hand that you will feel worse.  Getting out of a negative emotional place is not easy but definitely doable.

My Personal (and Painful) “Success” Story:

I struggled for years to stop believing there was nobody in my same boat.  I felt alone and angry.  I had been divorced with a young child, widowed, part of a blended family and later divorced again.  I was also an entrepreneur blazing an unworn path as a professional.  Ironically many people admired my courage and success!  They had no idea I was suffering in silence.

The good news is my suffering became intolerable and it motivated me to end it!

How did I do it?

Finding commonalities was my key to success.  There are always people who share a “similar” story. Certainly many people have been divorced and part of a blended family.  I’m not the only entrepreneur or person who works for themself.  Having one or two points of connection was good enough.  Sharing a common interest or child a similar age was also helpful.

My natural born nature led to having less people in my boat.  I was different enough (quirky!) that there were fewer people like me.  I searched and struggled to find a group that fit me.   It never happened.   Eventually I gave up and actually felt fine.   I appreciated the personal power I developed from feeling emotional pain and pushing past my negative thinking.   As a Counselor and Coach these experiences have enhanced my ability to understand and help others.  

Today your choices for getting support include Facebook groups and all types of Online Support Groups. There seems to be something for everyone.  A quick google search and you are on your way!  BUT… still you need at least one person you can see in person for support.  You can’t get a hug over the internet.

You feel less alone when you focus on life circumstances that overlap.  When it comes to feelings you can always connect.  People share stories that are filled with feelings.  Many times it is not communicated through words.  Pay attention to body language and listen for an angry,  sad or happy tone in their voice.  Everyone has experienced the gambit of good and bad feelings.  It’s unavoidable if you are human!!
