If all my clients behaved like my Public Relations clients they would be so much more successful. These PR professionals always get back to me on the same day that I contact them. It is very impressive and refreshing. They learn this habit from their early years working for big PR agencies where the higher ups do not tolerate anything but impeccable responsiveness.
If you are a business owner or self-employed professional, you are in sales. You are selling an expertise, a service, a product and your integrity. How you behave towards people who reach out to you is critical. When you don’t reply to an email or phone call you are inadvertently communicating that you don’t care enough to respond. From this “carelessness”, your client or potential client may conclude that your work for them will be careless as well. If slow responsiveness is repeated that client or potential will look elsewhere to get their needs met.
Responsiveness is important for job seekers as well. I have worked with several college graduates helping them network to find a job. They had to agree to be impeccably responsive with the people they would be contacting. I enjoyed helping a young person learn this valuable habit and know that it would impact their career and income for many years to come.
I am grateful to all my PR clients who helped me understand how important responsiveness is in building a successful business and career.
